Beyond the green

BTBNews

As you will know from last years catalogue for every case of our Insulair ‘nature cups’ you buy we make a donation to the Forest of Avon, the first of many initiatives we are undertaking. With so much travel going on at BTB we feel it is important to carbon offset as much as possible, so rather than paying money onto a website, which we’re not totally convinced by, we’d rather support a local and very real venture*.

The Forest of Avon is one of 12 Community Forests in England and currently covers 221 square miles in and around Bristol. In March we were very happy to help the Forest of Avon launch its ‘Free Trees Scheme’ with a gift of hedge trees to Mangotsfield School. Pupils and staff were able to plant the trees themselves as part of the school’s Environment Week. Maureen Hodge, coordinator of Mangotsfield School’s Environment Week, says ‘We are very grateful for the gift of these trees and for the support of the Forest of Avon – it will definitely help us with our work.’

Under the Free Tree Scheme, the Forest of Avon will provide trees for free to community groups, schools, parishes and local councils for use in community planting projects. The Free Tree Scheme is part of the Forest of Avon’s work on climate change – helping to create an environment that is better able to cope with some of the effects of climate change locally.

With over 1 million trees already planted since 1992 and a plan to plant a further 15 million in the next 40 years, we’re sure the project will go from strength to strength – even if we are a little concerned that 15 million trees would actually pretty much cover Bristol. We’ll worry about that nearer the time…… If you would like to do more for the environment in the more immediate future, take a look at our new range of biodegradable straws, cups and clutches.
