New judge for BTB Barista Bursary

November 8th 2016

The deadline is fast approaching for the BTB Barista Bursary (30th November to be exact) and we’ve had a few applications already. We’re expecting it to be a difficult task selecting this years winner which is why we wanted as much specialist help as possible. We’re lucky to have Mat North, James Shepherd and Brian Williams back to interview the baristas, and this year they are joined by the BTB Barista Bursary 2016 winner, Diana Johnston.

Diana is taking time out from her role as Head of Training at Taylor St Baristas to come to Bristol on 8th December to meet the finalists. She is going to be a great addition to the judging team and will be able to draw on her experience as a previous winner to help us find the right barista. She spends her day to day building and delivering curriculum for coffee professionals, to ensure a forward thinking and innovative quality focused approach at Taylor St Baristas. She gets to work across research, instruction and innovation – all great skills sets for a competing barista.

We found a few moments to catch up with Diana and find out more about how winning the BTB Barista Bursary had impacted on her:

“One of the biggest reasons that baristas do not compete is the financial strain that competition can cause. The other major reason is a lack of support, and guidance throughout the process. The bursary allows the competitor to remove these obstacles, in turn providing them with the opportunity to be creative. The BTB Barista Bursary was one of the best things that happened to me during my time as a competitor, and I sincerely recommend it to anyone wishing to compete. I was able to free my mind and focus more on enjoying the competition process, whilst learning more about coffee in general.”

We’re really excited to welcome Diana back to help us find the next BTB Barista Bursary winner. If you think you have what it takes to be the next BTB Barista Bursary, then make sure you apply. You have until 30th November to send us a short video showcasing your skills and personality using this simple form.
